Our graphic designers are charged with executing a variety of design needs for our clients. Sometimes they work with brands we’ve created; other times the engagement involves building designs and concepts off of existing brands. Regardless of the approach, under the guidance of an Art Director, the Graphic Designer applies design best practices to the creative challenge ahead of them to realize a deliverable that meets conceptual, aesthetic, and brand requirements.
So, what does it take to succeed here? Glad you asked.
First and foremost, you are hungry. You are pursuing greatness, and refuse to accept mediocrity in anything that you do. The best designers in the world design because they need to, and that is exactly the person we are determined to find. Quite simply, we want someone who bleeds creativity. Someone who daydreams in pixels and goes to sleep with fresh ideas still racing through their heads.
Beyond passion and drive, you must be an exceptionally strong designer. You must possess a full understanding of the principles of graphic and production design, and the instincts to know when the rules should be trampled. You must understand the nuances of typography, color, contrast, and proportions, and have the ability to consistently weave poetry from perplexity. In short, your work has to be as beautiful as it is smart.
Our industry favors the fleet, and we need a designer who brings real speed to the table. Someone with the ability to intuitively understand a creative problem and conceptualize ideas immediately. In order to do that, you must know the tools of the trade. You need true mastery of Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft products, and others—not just the basics. You should know features and shortcuts like the back of your hand, and have the ability to push these programs in ways their creators never imagined. Your files and your work must be clean and organized.
We’re a small team, so you have to be comfortable diving headfirst into new challenges. There aren’t always uniform templates for the projects we tackle, so we want someone eager to design pretty much anything. On Monday morning, you may be designing a case study, and by Tuesday, you are conceptualizing an email design system. There will be days when you may be a strategist, a researcher, and a designer all in the same meeting. Point is, things change daily here, which is exactly how we like it.
When it comes to personality, we want a true team player. We want someone who collaborates well in high-pressure environments. Someone with the confidence to know when to defend their ideas, but the humility to recognize the strength and perspectives that others can offer. Someone who can at once effectively mentor and elevate the others that surround them. This will be a critical role within this budding agency, and you must be equipped to handle your responsibilities with grace and poise. You need to be highly detail-oriented, responsible, and reliable.
Finally, you need to be curious. This industry moves far too quickly for us to ever become complacent. We need someone who is constantly seeking what’s next—someone with a disdain for the status quo, and a thirst for the undiscovered.
