Senior UX/UI Designer.

Contrast & Co. is seeking a passionate, dedicated, and highly creative individual to help lead our growing interactive team. The ideal candidate brings a wealth of user experience and interactive design to the table, has worked in a creative or agency environment, and most importantly of all, has the vision, drive, and determination to help us build something truly transformative.

The position at a glance.

The senior-level UX/UI Designer is charged with creating powerful and intuitive interactive experiences for our clients. Sometimes they work with brands we’ve created; other times the engagement involves building experiences off of existing brands. Regardless of the approach, the UX/UI Designer helps gather user requirements, translates them into thoughtful and robust design systems and experiences, and works alongside our clients and developers to help bring the experiences to life.

The intangibles.

So, what does it take to succeed here? Glad you asked.

You must be passionate about design.

First and foremost, you are hungry. You are pursuing greatness, and refuse to accept mediocrity in anything that you do. The best designers in the world design because they need to, and that is exactly the person we are determined to find. Quite simply, we want someone who bleeds creativity. Someone who daydreams in pixels and goes to sleep with fresh ideas still racing through their heads.

You must possess exceptional design talent.

Beyond passion and drive, you must be an exceptionally strong designer. You must possess a full understanding of the principles of interactive design, and the instincts to know when the rules should be trampled. You must understand the nuances of typography, color, contrast, and proportions, and have the ability to consistently weave poetry from perplexity. In short, your work should as beautiful as it is smart.

You must be organized and fast.

Our industry favors the fleet, and we need a UX/UI designer who brings real speed to the table. Someone with the ability to intuitively understand a creative problem and conceptualize ideas immediately. In order to do that, you must know the tools of the trade. You need true mastery of Sketch, InVision, Photoshop, and others—not just the basics. You should know features and shortcuts like the back of your hand, and have the ability to punish these programs in ways their creators never imagined. Your files and your work must be clean and organized.

You must be comfortable wearing many hats.

We’re a small team, so you have to be comfortable diving headfirst into new challenges. There is no uniform template for the projects we tackle, so we want someone eager to design pretty much anything. On Monday morning, you may be mapping a component library for a vast site redesign, and by Tuesday, you are skinning a SquareSpace microsite going live that afternoon. There will be days when you may be a strategist, a researcher, a writer, and a designer all in the same meeting. Point is, things change daily here, which is exactly how we like it.

You must have a great attitude.

When it comes to personality, we want a true leader. We want someone who collaborates well in high-pressure environments. Someone with the confidence to know when to defend their ideas, but the humility to recognize the strength and perspectives that others can offer. Someone who can at once effectively mentor and elevate the others that surround them. This will be one of the important roles within this budding agency, and you must be equipped to handle your responsibilities with grace and poise. You need to be highly detail-oriented, responsible, and reliable.

Finally, you need to be curious. This industry moves far too quickly for us to ever become complacent. We need someone who is constantly seeking what’s next—someone with a disdain for the status quo, and a thirst for the undiscovered.

Primary responsibilities.

  • Gather and evaluate user requirements in collaboration with clients
  • Illustrate design ideas using sketches, wireframes, flows, and sitemaps
  • Develop UI mockups and prototypes that clearly illustrate how sites function and what they look like
  • Design comprehensive component libraries, including elements such as typography structures, menus, forms tabs, and widgets
  • Prepare and present to internal teams and key stakeholders
  • Identify and troubleshoot UX problems
  • Conduct layout adjustments based on user feedback
  • Adhere to brand standards
  • Oversee QA efforts with developers

  • Proven work experience as a UX/UI Designer or similar role
  • Portfolio of design projects
  • Comprehensive knowledge of digital design platforms including Sketch, Photoshop, Illustrator, XD, and more
  • Client-facing and articulate
  • Detail-oriented, responsive, and organized
  • Good time-management skills
  • Great attitude—open to design feedback and constructive criticism
  • Ability to be in our Annapolis, MD, offices a few days a week is preferred, though not required
