Senior Copywriter.

Contrast & Co. is seeking a passionate, dedicated, and highly engaged individual to join our growing team. The ideal candidate brings a carefully honed capacity with writing and content deliverables of all shapes and sizes, has worked in a creative or agency environment, and most importantly of all, has the vision, drive, and determination to help us build something truly transformative.

The position at a glance.

The Senior Copywriter is charged with leading voice development for engagements across a wide range of industries, deliverables, and timelines, ensuring a polished, dynamic, and strategic approach to language for touchpoints large and small. In this role, you’ll need to absorb and distill a wide array of client-driven and contextual inputs—then translate that context into head-turning phrases and ideas that resonate with the right audiences across the country and beyond.

Reporting into the Director, Strategy & Content, the right candidate will create and champion work that sells ideas, inspires action, and drives affinity. You’ll collaborate with designers, digital producers, strategists, and client teams to create concepts and assets that drive meaningful engagement and results. You should have a knack for big-picture thinking and a dedication to the smallest details of grammar, self-editing, and brand positioning.

Ultimately, we are seeking someone with the ability to think big, focus small, and balance the daily to-dos with the future vision. An all-star with exceptional prioritization and organizational skills is a must, but someone who also possesses a dedication to building the systems and frameworks that help creative outputs scale is even better.

The intangibles.

So, what does it take to succeed here? Glad you asked.

You must be passionate about writing.

First and foremost, you are hungry. You are pursuing greatness, and refuse to accept mediocrity in anything that you do. The best wordsmiths in the world write because they need to, and that is exactly the person we are determined to find. Quite simply, we want someone who bleeds creativity. Someone who goes to sleep with fresh ideas and turns of phrase still racing through their heads.

You must be organized and fast.

Our industry favors the fleet, and we need a Senior Copywriter who brings real speed to the table. Someone with the ability to intuitively understand a creative problem and conceptualize messaging solutions in lockstep with working teams. In order to do that, you must balance systems and frameworks with broad strokes and brain dumps. You should cringe at grammatical errors and champion efficiency techniques and tools wherever possible. And ultimately, you must relish feedback and iteration, cultivating new ideas and concepts while never falling in love with any one word.

You must be comfortable wearing many hats.

We’re a small team, so you have to be comfortable diving headfirst into new challenges. There is no uniform template for the projects we tackle, so we want someone eager to create order where it’s lacking and systems that stick. There will be days when you may be a strategist, a researcher, a writer, and a designer all in the same meeting. Point is, things change daily here, which is exactly how we like it.

You must have a great attitude.

When it comes to personality, we want a true team player. We want someone who collaborates well in high-pressure environments. Someone with the confidence to know when to defend their ideas, but the humility to recognize the strength and perspectives that others can offer. Someone who can at once effectively mentor and elevate the others that surround them. This will be a critical role within this budding agency, and you must be equipped to handle your responsibilities with grace and poise. You need to be highly detail-oriented, responsible, and reliable.

Finally, you need to be curious. This industry moves far too quickly for us to ever become complacent. We need someone who is constantly seeking what’s next—someone with a disdain for the status quo, and a thirst for the undiscovered.

Primary responsibilities.

  • Steward the creation of messaging for brand engagements, interactive experiences, individual deliverables, and more
  • Write copy and narratives that are clever, impactful, motivating, and useful
  • Adapt your voice to serve a variety of audiences, industries, and strategic goals
  • Conduct research and information gathering in the development of content that supports each brand’s storytelling and strategy priorities
  • Generate many good ideas, many bad ideas, and a handful of genius ideas—rather than focusing on a single answer to a given challenge
  • Potential deliverables may include: signature brand messages, campaign concepts, taglines, brand manifestos, and strategic themes, as well as individual elements like website copy, email campaigns, blog posts, social posts, and more
  • Work closely with leadership and project teams to guide the copywriting vertical at the organization
  • Work directly with designers to synthesize messaging choices with design ones—demonstrated appreciation for the relationship between text and visuals
  • Define and organize messaging systems, processes, and workflows in a fast-paced environment with a lot of fluidity

Requirements.

  • 6+ years of experience as a writer, editor, or journalist for creative and forward-looking brands, companies, or media that has business audiences
  • Previous agency experience is preferable but not required
  • Demonstrated exceptional writing and editorial skills
  • A curious mind that thrives on the process of research and information gathering—capacity for interpreting analytics to inform content ideas
  • Agile and seasoned with a wide variety of content types, from one-liners to social snippets to longer-form narratives
  • Business-savvy and capable with often-complex strategic business concepts in areas such as technology, healthcare, law, social good, and more
  • Ability to present and express your ideas clearly—both internally and client-facing
  • Multi-tasker capable of producing, managing, and editing high volumes of content and juggling several priorities at once
  • Basic design skills a plus (experience with Creative Cloud, Figma, and other design process tools is beneficial to ensure alignment with the rest of the team)
  • Great attitude—open to feedback and constructive criticism
  • Ability to be in our Annapolis, MD, offices a few days a week is preferred, though not required
